Session 3 creating safe spaces

Safe Space Workshop Session THREE ''What creates the conditions for safe spaces within groups and why tensions can sometimes arise''

Thank you to everyone who has accessed sessions ONE and TWO of the online training. It's great to know so many people are interested in helping create psychologically safer places in informal and peer-led groups. Together we can help build a kinder, safer world, where people feel more connected to each other.

Building connections is what helps tackle isolation and loneliness, feeling alone and managing a long-term condition can be very difficult.

Having peer support can help. The aim of the sessions is to help support developing peer-led and informal groups which work well for its members.

Session ONE began to explore, why people may like to be with others. It also began to look at the different needs people may have depending on whether they were introvert or extrovert, it also touched on the challenges of loneliness and isolation.

Session TWO picked up from some of the points in session ONE and began to explore the value of peer-led and Informal groups, the idea of the aim and purpose of the group, participants are thinking about, and using a Vision Board began to focus on what it is the group want to move towards for their group.

Session THREE follows on from sessions ONE and TWO and beings to explore some challenges which can be faced. These are challenges which can happen in many situations where a group of people come together, not only peer-led or informal groups.

Sometimes health challenges can make people feel vulnerable and that vulnerability can sometimes make it more difficult to connect with others. Understanding how to create conditions which support safe spaces can help the group remain a safe and welcome space for all its members.

This session is about learning to avoid tensions. If you already are experiencing tensions in your group some other intervention would be better advised. The session creates space for participants to decide the conditions they want to create in their peer-led or informal group, so everyone feels safe and begins to explore ideas to manage tensions if they arise,

There is one final session to this learning which shall be released next.

This final session provides a framework onto which participants can build learning to help plan and take forwards their peer-led and informal group.
